Unit Concept: Functions: a Study in Representations

1 Understanding (Understand): The students will understand that there are different ways to represent functions, each with their own pros and cons.

1 Essential Question: Is there a “best” way to represent a function? Is there just one best way to represent knowledge, i.e. functions. 

Knowledge Goals (Know-most basic):

·      Students will be able to recognize what a function looks like (linear and quadratic).

·      Students will be able to define domain, range, zero, and intercept.

Do/Skills Goals (Do):

·      Students will evaluate what polynomials are functions and which are not.

·      Students will be able to match graphs with equations

·      Students will be able to create a function with given criteria of

o   Range, domain, zeros, and/or intercepts
